Port of Rotterdam expanding shore power facilities

Work has begun on a new shore-based power unit that will allow Heerema Marine Contractors’ crane vessels to switch from diesel generators to wind power after mooring at Europe’s biggest port.

According to the Port of Rotterdam, the shore-based power unit will generate an emissions reduction ‘roughly equivalent to that of 5,000 diesel-powered cars’.

The system is being developed by Eneco in partnership with the Port of Rotterdam Authority.

Eneco not only intends to supply Heerema with shore-based power, but also vessels berthed at other locations in the area, the Port of Rotterdam said.
