Silverstream Technologies has announced the installation of air lubrication technology onboard the MSC Irina containership.
The work was completed in collaboration with the shipping company and Yangzijiang Shipbuilding Holdings Ltd (YZJ), Silverstream said in a social media post yesterday (21 February).
The installation on the MSC Irina – which was floated out in November – is the first of an extensive roll out programme across a fleet of MSC newbuilds due to take place over several years.
With a container capacity of more than 24,000 TEU, the MSC Irina and sister vessel MSC Loreto, are reportedly the largest containerships in the world.
Silverstream says its Silverstream System saves an average of 7% on fuel consumption. Speaking to ship.energy last year, Founder and CEO, Noah Silberschmidt, said the company was ‘thinking about the possibility to have 4,000 installations’ of the technology by 2032.
