Leaders from the global energy sector will gather in London in the second quarter of 2025 for the International Summit on the Future of Energy Security.
Convened by the International Energy Agency (IEA) and hosted by the UK government, the summit will address current and future risks to the global energy system and explore solutions to ensure continuous and affordable energy access.
IEA Executive Director Fatih Birol described how the summit is taking place at an important time. ‘The global energy crisis highlighted the critical nature of energy security. The IEA will continue to ensure energy access at affordable prices while honoring climate commitments. I appreciate the UK government’s support in hosting this summit,’ he said.
The IEA, marking its 50th year, has helped to mitigate ongoing energy crises by releasing emergency oil stocks and implementing a plan to reduce Europe’s reliance on Russian natural gas. The upcoming summit will focus on emerging challenges that threaten energy transitions and system resilience.
Topics will include the geopolitical, technological, and economic factors influencing energy security. Attendees will review trends in energy demand, supply, and trade; clean energy adoption; the availability of critical minerals for technologies like wind turbines, solar panels, and electric vehicles; and investment allocation in the shift away from fossil fuels.
UK Energy Secretary Ed Miliband highlighted the need for clean energy, noting: ‘In an unstable world, accelerating the transition from fossil fuels to clean energy is crucial. The UK aims to lead in clean energy and work with the IEA to ensure global energy security.’
