Renewable methanol projects surge with rapid growth in 2024

The Methanol Institute is now tracking 174 renewable methanol projects worldwide, with a projected total capacity of 21.2 million metric tonnes by 2027 and 28 million tonnes by 2030.

This represents significant growth from previous estimates reported in Bunkerspot, where the total pipeline had already been noted as expanding rapidly earlier this year.

The renewable methanol pipeline saw a notable increase in growth of 0.8 million tonnes in July and August, up from 27.2 million tonnes. Overall, the combined renewable and low-carbon methanol pipeline expanded from 35.4 million to 36.1 million tonnes.

Project tracking reveals 104 e-methanol projects with a total capacity of 16.8 million tonnes, 70 bio-methanol projects at 11.2 million tons, and 13 low-carbon methanol projects with an 8.1-million-ton capacity.

Since February 2024, the renewable methanol pipeline has seen a 42% increase and averaging 1.4 million tons of growth per month. Compared to January 2023, the pipeline has more than tripled in size.

In August, five new renewable methanol projects were added—four in China and one in Europe—while one project was removed from the list.
