LR grants AiP to SHI for ammonia-fuelled boxship and ‘new generation’ LNG carrier

Lloyd’s Register (LR) has granted Approval in Principle (AiP) to Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) for an ammonia-fuelled 9,300 TEU container vessel and a ‘new generation’ 174,000 cubic metre (cbm) liquified natural gas carrier (LNGC).

LR and SHI have signed an agreement for a joint development project (JDP) which will see SHI will work with Eastern Pacific Shipping to carry out the design studies on the ammonia-fuelled container vessel, while LR will provide the review of SHI deliverables and technical advice for further design development.

Sung-Gu Park, President – North East Asia, Lloyd’s Register, said: ‘There is a growing demand for container vessels that incorporate innovative technologies to comply with stringent regulations and environmental standards for zero carbon.’

As previously reported, SHI has also secured an AiP for its ammonia-fuelled container ship design from Korean Register (KR).
