A new ammonia floating production storage and offloading (FPSO) unit concept developed by South Korean shipbuilder Samsung Heavy Industries has received an approval in principle (AiP) from classification society ABS.
Named Samsung Ammonia Blue, the concept has an expected production capacity of 1.2 million tonnes of ammonia per year and features advanced safety components.
In a statement issued today (Wednesday 2 October), Haeki Jang, Chief Technology Officer at Samsung Heavy Industries, said: ‘For the green future, ammonia is the most reliable source, recognized as a hydrogen carrier and a carbon-free fuel.’
The AiP follows ABS’ design reviews on the topside process, interface system and layout, in line with classification and statutory requirements.
