DNV data highlights slowdown in November alternative-fuelled vessel orders

StatiStatistics from DNV’s Alternative Fuels Insight (AFI) platform show a slowdown in new orders for alternative-fuelled vessels in November 2024, with 27 new vessels recorded.

This represents a decline from October’s record-breaking figures, although the overall trend for 2024 remains strong.

LNG continued to dominate, with 23 vessels ordered. The container segment accounted for 15 of these orders, while the car carrier segment contributed six. Additionally, four ammonia-fuelled vessel orders were placed, with no new orders recorded for LPG, methanol, or hydrogen-powered vessels.

‘Although these results show a slowdown of new orders for alternative-fuelled vessels in November, this follows the strongest month ever in October, and the overall trend remains strong,’ said Jason Stefanatos, Global Decarbonisation Director at DNV Maritime.

‘LNG remains the headline story with exceptional activity since the summer months. This is clearly being driven by the container segment, where the vast majority of new orders in 2024 have been for alternative-fuelled vessels,’ he added.

Despite the November dip, year-to-date figures show a 119% year-on-year (yo-y) increase in LNG-fuelled vessel orders and 7% rise in orders for methanol-fuelled vessels.
