Multi-purpose Japanese vessel ‘world’s first’ to run on MGO and wind power

Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) has announced that it had launched a new multipurpose vessel able to operate on marine gasoil (MGO) and wind assisted propulsion.

According to a statement on 30 January, the Prima Verde is powered by two ‘VentoFoil’ wind assisted propulsion units, manufactured by Dutch company Econowind. 

The engine, from Japan Engine Corporation, can run exclusively on marine gas oil (MGO).

The 129.66m vessel will be operated by MOL Drybulk Ltd, was delivered at Onomichi Dockyard, in Hiroshima, Japan.

The MOL Group aims to achieve net zero GHG emissions by 2050.
