Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL) has launched a new group-wide carbon inset programme for ocean transport, Blue Action Net-Zero Alliance.
In a statement issued today (12 February), MOL said that the programme will allow shippers and non vessel operating common carriers (NVOCCs) to lower their Scope 3 GHG emissions by ‘continually offering and enhancing low-emission marine transportation services using alternative fuels’.
MOL said that, 12 months ago, it became the first shipping company in the Asia-Pacific region to issue the environmental attributes certificates (EACs) of low-emission voyages using alternative fuels tradable on a platform built in collaboration with the Dutch startup 123Carbon.
Over the past year, the company has built up a system that can issue EACs and allocate them to customers. In addition, the MOL has executed transactions with three NVOCCs for the issued EACs – Nippon Express Holdings, C.H. Robinson Worldwide, Inc. and MOL Logistics – and this has led to the launch of the Blue Action Net-Zero Alliance programme.
