Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) has announced that a large-size ammonia-powered ammonia carrier that it has been developing with Namura Shipbuilding and Mitsubishi Shipbuilding has received approval in principle (AiP) from ClassNK for its ammonia fuel compatible design.
In a statement issued today (14 March), MOL said that the carrier design features larger cargo tanks than typical very large gas carriers (VLGCs) and very large ammonia carriers (VLACs). The vessel is also described as ‘groundbreaking’ in that it meets the restrictions on entry into major power plants in Japan, while maintaining specifications consistent with current VLGCs in terms of connections to power plants and ammonia supply terminals during loading and discharging.
