Professor Stephen de Mora, who officially assumed the role of President of the Institute for Marine Engineering, Science and Technology (IMarEST) this week, has pledged to use his new position to build cross-industry collaboration in tackling critical issues facing the world’s oceans.
In his inaugural speech delivered at the Institute’s AGM on Wednesday (26 March), Professor de Mora said: ‘The world’s oceans are in crisis, and the IMarEST is uniquely positioned to bring together global experts in engineering, science, and technology to create integrated solutions for the marine environment. However, we need more scientists to join the conversation, as well as individuals from diverse backgrounds and those at the beginning of their careers.’
Professor de Mora is the former chief executive of the Plymouth Marine Laboratory in the UK. His areas of research include environmental analytical chemistry, marine pollution monitoring and assessment, chemical oceanography, biogeochemistry, and polar science.
Chris Goldsworthy, the CEO of the IMarEST, said: ‘Professor de Mora’s appointment is a significant milestone for the IMarEST. His scientific expertise will undoubtedly enhance our membership offerings and representation in this area, and we look forward to the opportunities his leadership will bring.’
The Institute also welcomed Professor Deborah Greaves, an expert in ocean engineering, as President Elect at its AGM.
