The ship.energy summit 2024

08 May - 09 May

Sustaining momentum: sourcing technology, finance and skills for shipping’s decarbonisation

This year’s ship.energy summit will consider how companies should formulate their decarbonisation plans and then put them into action, with a particular focus on how to evaluate which technologies and energy sources are best for them, how to access finance and support for projects, retrofits and fleet renewal, and how to ‘futureproof’ their workforce for employment in a post-fossil fuel environment.

As part of Portugal Shipping Week

Shipping is facing an era of profound change as it navigates its route through the energy transition. However, policymakers and regulators have now given the industry some clarity around the milestones for its decarbonisation. In terms of timelines, the IMO’s revised greenhouse gas strategy has provided a foundation on which shipping stakeholders can begin to construct and implement their respective decarbonisation strategies, while the phased entry into force of new European environmental regulation will impact global shipping and require individual companies to address their technology and energy requirements in the short, mid and longer term as part of their approach to regulatory compliance.

But with GHG emission reduction targets in sight, comes the reality check. This year’s ship.energy summit will consider how companies should formulate their decarbonisation plans, and then put them into action, with a particular focus on how evaluate the technologies (and energy sources) that are best for them, how to access finance and support for projects, retrofits and fleet renewal, and how to ‘futureproof’ their workforce for employment in a post-fossil fuel environment.

As always, the ship.energy summit will look at the industry’s progress on decarbonisation with reference to case studies and real projects, and with a focus on initiatives in Iberia.
