The Marine Energy Transition Forum returns to The Port of Antwerp-Bruges in October 2022 to pick up the key threads of the complicated and evolving debate on shipping’s energy transition

METF provides a platform for some of the leading experts on shipping’s energy transition to share their knowledge and insights. By the end of the Forum, delegates will have a clear and informed picture of what has been achieved in the decarbonisation of shipping – as well as the scale of the task ahead. SESSION ONE – PLAYING BY THE RULES: REGULATION AND THE COMMERCIAL LANDSCAPE

This session will consider current and upcoming environmental regulations for shipping in the EU and at global level, covering the IMO’s CII and EEXI regulations, the implications of the EU’s Fit for 55 proposed measures, including FuelEU Maritime and the EU ETS.
Panellists will also discuss the issue of fuels’ well-to-wake GHG emissions, and take a look at market-based measures, such as carbon levies and the use of the voluntary carbon credit market, which are designed to support and accelerate shipping’s decarbonisation.

SESSION TWO – THE DESIGN CHALLENGE: HOW TECHNOLOGY IS DELIVERING ON THE DECARBONISATION MANDATE

This session will bring together naval architects, class societies, OEMs, and propulsion technology specialists. They will consider current and potential vessel and engine/propulsion design options that will enable shipping’s adoption of new fuels – across different vessel segments. Panellists will also look at onboard carbon capture, battery/hybrid technology, and fuel cells.

SESSION THREE – GETTING FROM A TO Z: THE ENERGY SUPPLY INFRASTRUCTURE

This session will review the supply landscape for the new marine fuels, ranging from biofuel and LNG to methanol, ammonia and hydrogen, as well fuel availability and the timelines for offering green variants of these fuels produced from renewable electricity.
It will also consider how useful the ‘green shipping corridor’ concept could be as a testbed for new fuel supply chains, the evolution of bunkering infrastructure for these new energies, as well as the state of play in the provision of onshore power at EU and global ports.

SESSION FOUR – WORKING WITH WHAT WE HAVE: DECARBONISATION OPTIONS FOR THE EXISTING FLEET

This session will consider the options to reduce the carbon/SOx/NOx/PM footprint of the current fleet, with a focus on fuel consumption monitoring, vessel optimisation/ digitalisation and the market traction for wind propulsion technologies. Panellists will also consider the options for retrofitting technologies to extend a vessel’s lifespan in the run up to 2050 – as well as the proposition that vessel scrapping will accelerate the shift to zero carbon newbuilds.

PORT PROFILE: THE PORT OF ANTWERP-BRUGES

The merger of the ports of Antwerp and Zeebrugge has created Europe’s largest export port – and it has also brought together two of Europe’s most proactive and important energy hubs. This session will profile the initiatives underway at the Port of Antwerp-Bruges to deliver on decarbonisation and new energy ambitions and targets – in the port environment and in support of the shipping and bunker sectors.

SESSION FIVE – STAKEHOLDERS AND SKILLS: CROSS-SECTOR COLLABORATION AND TRAINING THE ‘DECARBONISATION WORKFORCE’

This final session will bring together stakeholders along the shipping supply chain, including owners, charterers, energy suppliers, shippers and financial institutions, to discuss how collaboration and partnerships can advance and also help to meet the cost of the sector’s decarbonisation. The emphasis will be on specific initiatives – either at early stage or moving towards commercialisation – as well as the role of industry coalitions.
Panellists will also address the increasingly urgent question of how to upskill the maritime workforce for the advent of new energy sources.
