From local to global: the impact of regional innovation on maritime decarbonisation

In 2027, the ship.energy summit moves to France for the first time and the sixth edition of the event, to be held in the port city of Marseille, will bring shipping and port stakeholders together to discuss how effectively all the ‘moving parts’ in maritime decarbonisation – regulation, technology and new fuels – are working together to deliver on the International Maritime Organization’s targets and timelines for a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions.

#SES27

ship.energy summit 2027

This year’s summit will look at what a regional approach to decarbonisation means in practice – examining the positives as well as the downsides.

Industry experts will explain how regional or national innovation in new fuel production and technology development can initiate momentum on decarbonisation on a local level and then how, through collaboration and knowledge transfer, this can be harnessed to accelerate the energy transition on a global basis.

Discussions at the summit will look at what is required to kickstart and support regional innovation in the fuel, technology, shipbuilding, ship-owning, bunkering and port sectors. What are the public and private finance mechanisms that are either in place or still needed to support entrepreneurship during a business start-up phase, through to commercialisation, and then on to growth at scale, including access to export markets and new production locations.

Panellists at the summit will offer concrete examples of how pilot projects, green corridors, and decarbonisation ‘think tanks’ are doing the groundwork on maritime decarbonisation, and incubating innovation across port and shipping ecosystems.

A key focus of SES 27 will also be on the role of regional regulation and how this can be used to catalyse decarbonisation ahead of the implementation of a global GHG regulation – in whatever form this may take.

Is regional regulation always supportive of shipping’s decarbonisation or can its complexity or weakness of execution sometimes work against its original premise? Topics for discussion at SES 27 will include EU regulation and industrial and port strategies, as well as other emerging regulatory frameworks, fuel certification schemes, voluntary carbon markets, and also how corporate responsibility in relation to Scope 1,2 and 3 emissions is impacting decision-making on business operations and supply chain management.

As always, the ship.energy summit will look at the industry’s progress on decarbonisation with reference to case studies and real projects, and with a strong focus on initiatives in France and across Southern Europe.
