The inaugural Bunkering & Sustainability Forum is a new event focused on marine fuel strategies for islands and mid-sized ports. The event is designed to examine the current and future availability of traditional and alternative fuels in these ports and the infrastructure and maritime facilities needed to support them.

Llewellyn began his career in the oil industry in 1980, working both as a journalist and as oil broker in London and New York, with Petroleum Argus, Eperon Petroleum, Albion Oil, Petroleum Intelligence Weekly and OPEC Listener, before joining MRC Business Information Group in Oxford – which later became Lloyd’s List Intelligence after MRC’s acquisition by Informa – where he rose to Managing Director before leaving in May 2003 to establish Petrospot Ltd.
He is a Founding Member of the International Bunker Industry Association, which he helped create in 1993 and has organised conferences, seminars, training courses and multiple other events in 35 countries around the world and attended events as a journalist or conference speaker in a further dozen countries.
Llewellyn is co-creator, co-founder and co-owner of the biennial London International Shipping Week, whose first edition took place in September 2013 and has become one of the largest maritime events in the world.
Llewellyn was born in Abergavenny, Wales, in 1957 and lives in Oxfordshire.

Port Authority of Santa Cruz de Tenerife
Pedro Suárez López de Vergara is the President of the Port Authority of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, a position he has held since August 2023, following a previous term at the helm of the institution between 2018 and 2019. He holds a degree in Business Studies from the University of La Laguna and has completed postgraduate training in marketing and senior management. His professional background spans the business sector, public administration, and institutional management.
He has held leadership roles within the Government of the Canary Islands, the Island Council of Tenerife, and the City Council of La Laguna, overseeing areas such as Trade, Economic Development, Urban Planning, and Relations with the European Union.
Since assuming the presidency of the Port Authority, he has promoted a strategy focused on sustainability, diversification, and innovation, strengthening the province’s ports as key hubs for cruise traffic, ship repair, renewable energy, and international logistics.
With a personable approach and a strategic vision, Pedro Suárez has concentrated his efforts on enhancing the role of ports as economic drivers for the region.

This session will focus on Tenerife and the decisions it has made, and will continue to make, in its ambitions to meet environmental regulations while still being able to offer global shipping the fuels and port facilities that it demands. The port will outline some of the clean energy and efficiency-enhancing initiatives it is undertaking in advance of a tour of the port’s facilities and a boat trip to witness live bunkering operations.

Recently graduating from The Oxford Bunkering Course by ship.energy, he is equipped with the latest knowledge and insights in bunkering practices, empowering him to innovate and drive progress within the field. With over a decade of experience in marketing and sales across various sectors including advertising, automotive, and cybersecurity, Miguel Ángel’s passion lies in showcasing the value and potential of Ports of Tenerife.

With a legal background, I have over 15 years of experience working as a Senior Consultant supporting the promotion and economic development of the Canary Islands.
Throughout my career, I have also held coordination and management roles within the institution responsible for promoting the islands as an investment destination. My work has focused on the design and implementation of economic promotion strategies, the development of international collaboration networks, and the attraction of investment.
I actively contribute to showcasing the competitive advantages of the Canary Islands — including its dynamic ecosystem, strong talent pool, strategic connectivity, and one of the most competitive tax regimes in Europe, which is managed and promoted by our institution.

BASF Delegates will enjoy a tour of the port and sheltered anchorage of Santa Cruz de Tenerife on board a catamaran that will sail past the port’s bunkering infrastructure. A highlight will be the live ship-to-ship LNG bunkering operation between the New Frontier 1 LNG tanker and Aida Cosma cruise ship.
The tour will end with a special lunch reception at the exclusive Real Club Nautico de Tenerife.
