Eugenia Benavides

After a career spanning more than 40 years, Eugenia Benavides has officially retired as an employee of Organización Terpel S.A. She leaves a huge gap in the bunkering sector, both in the day-to-day commercial activities of a thriving international industry and in the vitally important networking activities that characterise this famously convivial business in which she has always excelled. Since 1984, Eugenia worked with Colombian downstream oil company Terpel, holding various positions, from sales assistant to marketing director, from operations to commercial manager, and from being the company’s legal representative prior to the merger between Terpel del Norte and Organización Terpel, to spending the last 20 years as Director of Marine Fuels. Llewellyn Bankes-Hughes, now CEO of ship.energy, first met Eugenia in May 1993: ‘This was an exciting year. I had just launched BunkerNews, the world’s first magazine dedicated to the bunker industry, and helped create the International Bunker Industry Association (IBIA), which was officially launched in Orlando, Florida. This was IBIA’s first ever conference, and the first I had ever run. It also happened to be Eugenia’s first conference and that is where we met. We have been great friends ever since.’ Over the years, Eugenia has spoken at numerous BunkerNews / Petrospot / ship.energy bunker conferences and training courses, particularly in the Americas, but has also spoken at many other events focused on marine fuels as well as women in shipping, equality, diversity, and local issues, whether in her native Barranquilla on Colombia’s Caribbean coast, or elsewhere in Colombia, Latin America, North America and Europe. Eugenia is very well travelled and equally well known throughout the world. She has been a very active member of various professional and community organisations, the most prominent being IBIA which she has represented as a Board Member almost continuously between April 2011 and March 2025, when she steps down from the board. She has also been a WISTA Colombia board member since 2019, and is currently Chairman of the Board. Eugenia’s friendliness and generosity of spirit have earned her enormous respect both inside and outside the bunker industry. They have also earned her multiple awards and accolades, among them being named for the last four years in the list of 100 Most Influential Women in Shipping. Although now officially retired, it is highly unlikely that she will step back quietly from the world stage and is very keen to stay connected. She is already now an independent consultant to a number of companies. For those wishing to contact her, her personal details are: Mob: +57 31 5721 8311 and Email: [email protected].
