Norwegian company Fuella has finalised an agreement with Porto do Açu, a subsidiary of Prumo Logística, to develop a low-carbon hydrogen and derivatives hub at the port complex.
The 520 MW hub near Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, is scheduled to begin operations in 2030. The complex will produce 400,000 tonnes of green ammonia annually.
‘This plant will bolster our capacity to produce and export green hydrogen and ammonia, meeting both international and Brazilian market demands,’ said Mauro Andrade, Prumo’s Executive Director of Business Development.
Fuella, backed by Allianz Capital Partners, signed the first area reservation contract for the newly licensed low-carbon hydrogen hub at Porto do Açu. The agreement includes a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to advance the project, which will utilise water electrolysis to generate green ammonia.
Port of Antwerp-Bruges International, a strategic partner of Porto do Açu, played a key role in supporting the agreement. The initiative is part of a broader effort to establish Porto do Açu as a major export corridor for green ammonia from Brazil to Europe.
Dr. Thorsten Helms, Managing Director of Business & Corporate Development at Fuella, highlighted Porto do Açu’s strategic location and robust infrastructure as critical factors in the decision.
The project demonstrates that Fuella is expanding its international portfolio with an emphasis on more sustainable investments.
