James qualified as a solicitor in 2008 and has a reputation as a strong technical shipping lawyer. James has an astute commercial understanding of shipping and international trade disputes particularly from his secondments to a major international insurance company and one of the world’s leading commodities traders. He acts for clients throughout the marine industry including insurers, ship owners, charterers, traders and bunker suppliers. James has a broad range of shipping and international trade expertise and is recognised as having real gravitas and credibility in this sector.

Marina heads the Hamburg office of Infospectrum, where she has spent 17 years assessing counterparty risk across shipping, energy and commodities, working with bunker companies, ship owners and operators to identify risk before it becomes a default or insolvency. Her focus is on credit assessment, exposure monitoring and early warning analysis, backed by due diligence and sanctions screening.
Her work spans Europe and the former Soviet Union, with a particular focus on the sanctions landscape affecting Russia related trade, where exposure to a sanctioned counterparty can freeze payments and unravel a contract just as fast as a straightforward credit failure. Marina is a regular contributor to Lloyd’s List Intelligence, and has chaired the Sanctions Compliance Panel at the Infospectrum Risk Forum during London International Shipping Week.

Mark Smith started his career as a Marine Engineer on container ships before moving ashore as a Technical Superintendent managing container, multi-purpose, and bulk carriers. Mark then moved to a Fleet Superintendent role at Maersk Line with technical oversight of up to 15 vessels and crew.
In 2013 Mark moved to North of England P&I and soon became involved in engineering and fuel related enquiries. Mark deals with numerous bunker enquiries and developed the VPS fuel insights platform to provide our members with an overview of poor-quality fuel and suppliers.
From 2020 to date Mark has founded the Navigating Decarbonisation website and working group whilst co-authoring numerous guidance papers and whitepapers on biofuels and other alternative fuels. North and Standard P&I merged to form NorthStandard and combined their efforts and experience of fuels.
Senior Quality Manager – Marine

Michael joined World Fuel Services, as Senior Quality Manager for Marine Technical, in December 2019 following 17 years in the fuel testing industry with Lintec Testing Services / Intertek ShipCare. As a member of the marine technical team his focus is delivering added value to WFS customers. The technical team also offers support for the WFS physical delivery locations, support in relation to continued progression of legislative reform, development of new fuels and technologies and quality / quantity disputes.
Michael is heavily involved with a range of established industry technical committees and working groups as well as industry associations within the marine fuel sector. He currently represents the UK on the BSI PTI /002 working group as well as number of ISO working groups including the ISO 8217 working group ISO/TC 28/SC 4/WG 6, and the ISO Alternative Marine Fuels group ISO /TC28/SC4/WG18. He is also an active member in a number of different working groups and sub-committees at The Energy Institute as well as having previously spent 9 years as a member of the CIMAC Working Group 7 for Fuels.
Michael is the immediate past Chairman of the International Bunker Industry Association (IBIA), a position he held for two years. He joined the IBIA Board of Directors in April 2014 taking an active role in the development and progression of the association. During his time at IBIA he acted as the chairman of the working group for Training and Education and was elected to the position of Vice Chair of the IBIA board of directors in April 2016. Michael took on the role as the Chairman of the IBIA Board of Directors in April 2018 working closely with the Director of IBIA to ensure progression and recognition of the contribution the association provides to its members and the bunkering industry as a whole.

Georges Panaghoulis is the Head of Price Risk and Hedging at Island Oil Holdings. He began his career in risk management in 2015 at Peninsula Petroleum, before joining Island Oil in 2020 in his current role. Over that time, he has been involved in the set-up of hedging procedures and strategies, exposure reporting, clearing accounts, ETRM implementation and process automation, market analysis, derivatives trading and sales, carbon credits trading and live price evaluation. Georges is an engineer specialising in mechanics and energetics, and started his professional career in 2011 as an Area Sales Manager of technical products. He holds an Executive MBA from Imperial College London.
