Captain Brendon Owen Hawley, born in Durban on 4 July 1953 whilst his parents were on vacation from East Africa. He spent his formative years in numerous schools around Kenya, Uganda, and Tanganyika (now Tanzania) where his father was in the British Police Force on transfers. At the age of 8 years old he was sent to South Africa in order to get a stable education as a boarder at St Charles College in Pietermaritzburg.
On completion of high school, Brendon followed in the footsteps of his grandfather Captain Owen Williams who was very influential in his career choice, and joined his first ship MV Adventurer of T&J Harrison Lines sailing out of Durban Harbour on the 14th December 1971 for Liverpool.
Brendon’s maritime career both at sea and ashore has spanned more than 52 years of which 18 years as a seafarer rising through the ranks from cadet to Master serving on various types of ships trading world-wide, such as General Cargo, Oil Tankers, Bulk Carriers and Container and ultimately qualifying and certified as Master Mariner (Class 1 Foreign Going – Unlimited). His sea service was under the flags of prominent companies namely, T&J Harrison Lines (United Kingdom), Safmarine Corporation and Unicorn Lines (South Africa), a brief stint on Durban Harbour Tugs then into marine surveying.
Transitioning ashore, Captain Hawley went on to serve in senior leadership roles with two Norwegian maritime Ship Owners, namely Gearbulk Shipping (Bergen) and Wilhelmsen Group (Oslo).
His global assignments over the next 27 year period included long-term postings based in Stamford – US, Montreal – Quebec, London – UK, Jakarta – Indonesia, Vancouver – British Columbia, Shanghai – China and Singapore. Whilst based in these various countries he travelled to the ports in most of North and South America, Europe and in the Asia Pacific countries.
Medium to short term project-based assignments included Sudan, Myanmar, Philippines, Nigeria, Brazil, Chile and Solomon Islands.
Brendon has built up extensive experience in international maritime operations, which has incorporated working alongside Port Authorities, Governments, major mining and trading corporations implementing the full shipping logistics from mine site to onboard vessel in both Philippines and Solomon Islands. The ability to integrate quickly and effectively into any environment, seamlessly working with different cultures, is born-out by his extensive portfolio of global postings.
His areas of expertise ashore encompass vessel productivity, shore-side logistics, maritime infrastructure and project development, marine surveying, both port and terminal productivity development particularly in Australia, Philippines, Myanmar, Vietnam, Thailand, and Solomon Islands.
This has resulted in Brendon working alongside major ship owners, charterers and major corporations across most sectors of the maritime industry in the vessel vetting, port operations, compliance and safety. Extensive mentoring and leading geographically diverse teams as well as executive collaboration, communication and reporting to executive committees, and governance forums.
He has demonstrated an unrelenting focus on Safety in the maritime industry, and in addition is an international industry speaker at various Maritime International Conferences.
Captain Hawley was a pivotal figure in the Maritime Anti-Corruption Network (MACN), serving on the Committee from 2014 to 2016 and then as a member of the Main Board from 2017 to 2024. During his tenure, MACN grew from 20 to over 250 global member corporate shipping companies, representing more than 60% of the world’s commercial fleet.
He has recently been awarded “Chartered Master Mariner” status by The Honourable Company of Master Mariners and the Nautical Institute of London. This award is gold-standard and the pinnacle of his maritime career.
Brendon has been admitted into the “Freedom of the City of London” by the Lord Mayor of London.
He has been awarded Honorary Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers – London.
More recently he has taken the position as Chairman of The Nautical Institute (Southern Africa).
Inducted into the Shipping Hall of Fame at the recent South African Shipping Gala held at the Durban ICC on the 28th November 2025.
Captain Hawley returned to South Africa in 2021 and currently divides his time between Durban and Struisbaai.
