Alfa Laval’s commitment to the energy transition remains steadfast, even if the picture is less clear at a global regulatory level. The company’s focus is increasingly on developing new technologies that encourage the uptake of alternative fuels, whilst at the same time continuing to meet business demand for its existing solutions for conventional bunker fuels, Sven Schreiber, Business Unit President, Marine Solutions, Alfa Laval, tells ship.energy. Amid the development of a more varied marine fuel landscape, and in anticipation of more stringent regulations, how has demand for the company’s legacy solutions evolved in recent years? The portfolio related mainly to […]

A supplier declaration documented in a bunker delivery note is not enough to prevent fuel buyers bunkering biofuel blends that contain a lower percentage of renewable content than they have paid for. That is a key finding from the ‘Quantity assurance in marine biofuel supply chains’ report recently published by the Singapore-based Global Centre for Maritime Decarbonisation (GCMD), which emphasises that the renewable aspect of a biofuel blend (typically made up of fatty acid methyl esters (FAME) or hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO)) determines its eligibility for regulatory compliance schemes such as the EU Emissions Trading System (ETS) and FuelEU Maritime, emissions […]

Fuel suppliers should not assume that alternative fuelled vessels will start operating 100% on new fuels, including low GHG fuels, when they enter service, Øyvind Sekkesæter, lead author of this year’s edition of DNV’s Maritime Forecast to 2050, tells ship.energy. ‘That’s not realistic,’ he says, ‘and it’s important to remember that most alternative fuel capable ships are dual fuel so they are not constrained to one fuel necessarily [and] they can always switch to conventional fuel oil if that is deemed more commercially attractive.’ Uncertainty over the shape of, and timelines for, a global GHG reduction regulation to drive shipping’s […]
