Earlier this year, Spanish energy company Repsol announced it was investing more than €800 million in a project to produce renewable and circular methanol from waste through gasification in Tarragona. The International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC) organisation has established a technical working group with the aim of developing analytical approaches to detect the characteristics of high-risk feedstock used in biofuels, starting with used cooking oil (UCO), and then deploying these methods to ensure the integrity of its certified supply chains. The working group, titled Chemical Analytics of Feedstocks, brings together technical experts drawn from academia and research institutions, certification bodies and analytical testing agencies.
