American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) and the US Department of Energy’s (DOE) Office of Nuclear Energy have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to advance nuclear-powered commercial shipping. In a statement sent to ship.energy yesterday (12 October), ABS said that the agreement spans floating power solutions, nuclear-powered vessels and ‘the development of the ports, shipyards and industrial base needed to build and sustain them’. The classification society added that the ‘key priorities’ will include feasibility studies for floating nuclear power and nuclear transportation corridors, and working to develop the capacity for building nuclear-power shipping in the US. RINA and Thailand’s national energy company PTT have signed two Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) which will establish frameworks for research and collaboration across the maritime and energy sectors. Under the MoUs, RINA Consulting will provide engineering consultancy expertise, while RINA Services will operate in the field of certification, verification, assurance and classification Potential opportunities for research collaboration and knowledge sharing cover areas such as alternative and low-carbon fuels, Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF), vessel electrification, digitalisation, carbon management solutions, hydrogen readiness, and cold energy utilisation, including potential applications for Small Modular Reactors (SMRs). American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) has announced that a study it has undertaken with Blossom Energy and a ‘global shipping company’ has found that while the initial investment for a nuclear-powered liquefied natural gas carrier would be approximately 2.5 times that of a conventional LNG carrier, the design would substantially reduce fuel costs over the vessel’s operating life. In a statement sent to ship.energy this morning (30 September), ABS said that the study examined a 174,000 cubic metre (cbm) capacity LNG carrier equipped with a 20-25 MWe high-temperature gas-cooled reactor (HTGR) under development by Blossom Energy. The study assessed vessel arrangement, […]
