The International Association of Classification Societies (IACS) has announced a revision to its Unified Requirement (UR) M78 to include marine engines fuelled by ammonia. The revision, Rev.4, expands the scope of UR M78, which stipulates safety requirements for marine reciprocating internal combustion engines fuelled by gases or low-flashpoint fuels. The requirements now cover ammonia, in addition to natural gas, ethane, LPG, methanol and ethanol. South Korea-headquartered shipowner HMM has announced that the Oriental Aquamarine, the first MR tanker in South Korea to be equipped with a wing sail wind-assisted propulsion system (WAPS), has officially commenced operations. In a notice posted on LinkedIn this week, HMM said that it ‘plans to evaluate the performance of the wing sail over the next two years based on actual operational data and, will consider expanding its adoption across the entire bulk carrier fleet’. The Ammonia Energy Association (AEA) is providing public access to three Low-Emission Ammonia Data (LEAD) data sets which focus on clean ammonia plant, vessel, and infrastructure projects. The vessels data set includes information on 144 operational, ordered and announced ammonia-fuelled and 302 ammonia-ready vessels. All the projects are tracked by production capacity and timelines, project status, technology pathways, and technology vendors.
