Wallenius Marine, together with KTH, RISE and AlfaWall Oceanbird, is launching a new research project aimed at building new knowledge on how vessels can be designed to better harness the potential of modern wind propulsion systems. Supported by the Swedish Energy Agency, the project, WinPrOVeDD (Wind Propulsion Oriented Vessel Deck Design), will investigate how vessel design affects the efficiency of wing sails and other wind propulsion systems. In a statement issued yesterday (8 October), Wallenius Marine, which will lead the project, highlighted that previous research shows that conventional vessel designs can significantly limit performance, while a more aerodynamic design can […]

The Neoliner Origin, the wind-powered roll-on/roll-off (Ro-Ro) vessel developed by French shipping company Neoline, has called at the Port of Zeebrugge for the first time. The vessel, which as previously reported by ship.energy was built at RMK Marine shipyard in Tuzla, Turkey, made its first transatlantic crossing last year. Last week, French container shipping company CMA CGM, which has a stake in compatriot Neoline, announced that Zeebrugge would be added as a new port of call for the transatlantic route, joining Montoir, Saint-Pierre-et-Miquelin, Baltimore and Halifax. In a social media post today (22 September), CMA CGM confirmed the 136-metre-long, vessel, which […]

Lloyd’s Register (LR) has granted Design Appraisal to a fore-accommodation LNG carrier design from HD Hyundai Heavy Industries’ (HHI) which features the Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) Wind Challenger system. In a statement issued today (16 September), LR said that the relocation of the accommodation block and bridge to the bow of the vessel creates ‘a clear mid-to-aft deck area that can accommodate MOL’s Wind Challenger hard-sail system while maintaining operational and navigational requirements’. The configuration was also said to provide greater flexibility in the number, size and placement of sails to maximise wind-assisted propulsion performance. Andy McKeran, Chief Growth Officer, […]
