MEBC addresses ‘high risk, low reward’ market for bunkering

Llewellyn Bankes-Hughes

Llewellyn has worked in bunkering, oil and shipping since 1980, as a journalist and broker, in London and New York, working for Argus, Petroleum Intelligence Weekly, Eperon Petroleum, Albion Oil and Energy Information. He joined MRC in Oxford to launch BunkerNews, before establishing Petrospot in 2003 to publish Bunkerspot magazine, news and pricing services, and highly-respected bunker and shipping books.

He has created and run globally-recognised events in 26 countries around the world, including Middle East Bunkering Convention, Maritime Week Americas, Maritime Week Africa, ARACON, London International Shipping Week and European Shipping Week, and runs internationally-renowned training programmes, including the Oxford Bunker Course and BunkerExperience.

LR issues Guidance Notes for onboard hydrogen generation
Lloyd’s Register’s (LR) new Guidance Notes, published today (2 February) provide technical direction for the design, installation and integration of onboard hydrogen generators. The Guidance Notes have been developed in response to increasing interest from shipowners, yards and technology developers in producing hydrogen onboard using alternative fuels such as LNG, methanol and ammonia. IEA’s Birol highlights shift to ‘buyer’s market’ for key fuels and technologies
Fatih Birol, Executive Director of the International Energy Agency (IEA), has set out ‘seven certainties about energy for this age of uncertainty’ which include continued growth in renewables, a resurgence for nuclear power, greater energy security risks, and ‘ample’ manufacturing capacity for technologies such as batteries and solar panels – at least in the near term.
