The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has announced that its Sub-Committee on Ship Design and Construction (SDC) has finalised a workplan to develop a safety regulatory framework for ships using new technologies and alternative fuels to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Berge Bulk and Anemoi Marine Technologies Ltd have installed four folding rotor sails on Berge Bulk’s 208,000 DWT Newcastlemax vessel Berge Meru. The installation was carried out at Yiu Lian Dockyards, China, in December 2025 and the vessel has now completed its first voyage to Singapore. This project follows on from the delivery of four rotor sails on Berge Neblina, a Berge Bulk Valemax, in June 2024. Spanish wind propulsion supplier bound4blue has completed the installation of its eSAIL systems on the first of five MR vessels set to become wind-assisted under its contract with Maersk Tankers. Four 24-metre-high suction sails were fitted on the Maersk Trieste at EDR Shipyard in Belgium, following vessel preparation work at Yiu Lian Shipyard in Shenzhen, China, the company announced in a statement today (26 January).
