Bureau Veritas Marine & Offshore (BV) has awarded Type Approval to WinGD’s fuel-saving Variable Compression Ratio (VCR) technology. The VCR system enables marine dual-fuel engines to optimise compression ratios according to the fuel being used – thereby helping to improve efficiency and reduce fuel consumption. The system works by altering the piston position to adjust the combustion chamber volume and therefore the compression ratio. Dominik Schneiter, Chief Executive Officer of WinGD, said: ‘WinGD’s VCR technology represents a major breakthrough in marine engine innovation. By dynamically adjusting the compression ratio according to engine load, VCR enables our X-DF engines to deliver […]

ClassNK has released a new handbook that aims to provide practical guidance for shipowners, operators and other stakeholders on the introduction of onboard carbon capture systems (OCCS). In a statement issued today (23 October), the Japanese classification society emphasised that: ‘The introduction of OCCS requires consideration not only of the value chain from onboard CO₂ capture through to storage and other forms of final treatment, but also of mechanisms for quantifying and verifying emissions reductions.’ The new handbook, entitled Onboard Carbon Capture Systems Implementation Framework, is part of ClassNK’s Ship GHG Emissions Evaluation series.
