US-based naval architecture and marine engineering firm Glosten has joined the Nuclear Energy Maritime Organization (NEMO). Operating in the marine industry for over 65 years with offices in Seattle, Washington and Providence, Rhode Island, the firm specialises in vessel design and modification, marine operations and logistics, marine offshore structures, vessel procurement consulting, technology development, and marine infrastructure. The firm’s engineering capabilities extend to a variety of vessels and marine structures, including research vessels, ferries, tugs, barges, floating bridges, offshore installations, and special-purpose platforms. Houston-based nuclear specialist Deployable Energy has announced that it will be working with Lloyd’s Register (LR) to explore how its Unity 1MW microreactor can be used to power commercial shipping. In a notice posted on LinkedIn yesterday (30 October), Deployable Energy said the focus of their partnership will be: ‘Developing a strong safety and licensing framework; working toward regulatory alignment and certification; and enabling emission free, long-duration maritime operations.’ The companies will be collaborating on a ‘kickoff workshop’ in Washington, DC on 12 November. In a newly published summary report, Bureau Veritas Marine & Offshore (BV) says the first nuclear small modular reactors (SMRs) could be deployed in maritime applications from as early as 2030 – but urges that ‘regulatory and liability frameworks must urgently evolve to enable safe and sustainable deployment’.
