In a newly-published report on sustainable fuels for maritime and aviation, climate NGO Transport & Environment has concluded that pulp and paper, biomass power, energy from waste facilities (EfWs), ethanol, and biogas upgrading are ‘particularly attractive CO2 sources’. T&E said that these options ‘offer significant accessible biogenic CO2 volumes across Europe, along with low-to-moderate capture costs’. Australia’s Viva Energy is considering plans to start producing bio-LPG at its Geelong refinery in Victoria. In a statement issued yesterday (27 November), Viva Energy announced that it has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the energy reseller Origin Energy to develop a proof of concept for the bio-LPG production plant. If the project goes ahead, Viva Energy would manufacture the bio-LPG using domestically sourced used cooking oil (UCO) and other feedstocks, while Origin Energy would look to on-sell the gas to its customers.
