The Research Council of Norway has pledged NOK 20 million ($2 million) in initial funding to support the Marine Nuclear Propulsion System (MarNuPS) Pilot project, which is aiming to move maritime nuclear propulsion from system development towards physical integration and testing, with first vessel deployment targeted for 2031/32. The project is led by Emerald Nuclear Norway, and brings together VARD Group, Vard Electro, Island Offshore, NTNU, Imperial College London and Maskindynamikk in a consortium spanning reactor technology, ship design and integration, vessel operations, automation and academic research. The Research Council support comes in addition to substantial self-financing by the project […]

The BIMCO-chaired Tripartite Joint Industry Working Group (JIWG) has released two new frameworks that are intended to help improve the exchange of operations and emissions data across the maritime industry. In a statement issued today (27 October), the JIWG said the Operational Vessel Data (OVD) and Vessel Emissions Reporting (VER) are both ‘voluntary’ frameworks – so they do not create new reporting obligations but rather ‘provide a common approach that organisations may adopt to support more efficient and consistent data exchange’. The OVD aims to provide a structured format for exchanging operational vessel and fuel-consumption data. It defines common data […]

ABS has recognised HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering (HD KSOE) and HD Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) for completing the Concept Verification stage of New Technology Qualification (NTQ) for a breakerless medium-voltage direct current (MVDC) power system which is intended to maximise energy efficiency. In a statement sent to ship.energy yesterday (26 October), ABS said that the system will ‘enable high-capacity electrification as vessels grow larger and demand higher-power distribution’. Patrick Ryan, ABS Senior Vice President and Chief Technology Officer, commented: ‘Large vessels are asking more of their power systems, and MVDC offers a promising route to higher efficiency and […]
